Chintu is nine years old, and he knows exactly how many rules there are in his life: forty-three. Far too many. So one grey dawn, he runs away to a place with no rules at all. What he finds is jalebi and a merry-go-round, a brown dog named Biscuit, an empty stomach, a rainy night with no mother — and a dhaba owner who teaches him the one thing no rule ever could. A warm, funny story about freedom, hunger, and coming home.

About the author
A little mischief.
A lot of heart.
Bert Navin was born in India and is a citizen of Canada and the United States. He's been collecting stories for most of his life, ever since the creativity bug bit him as a teenager. Through his college years he wrote poetry, songs, and stories, never imagining he'd one day share them with readers. He also dabbled in painting and singing — and he still sings on Smule, where there's always room for one more voice.
For years, his stories lived in notebooks and unfinished manuscripts. He began at least thirty-five of them, each with a world of its own, before life carried him in another direction. He never quite forgot those stories, though. Revisiting them now is like meeting old friends and discovering that, despite the years apart, you still have plenty to talk about.
No Rules! was the one closest to his heart. Publishing it felt less like starting something new and more like keeping a promise to his younger self, who had always dreamed of telling stories. He's since returned to a crime thriller he first began writing in 1999 — proof that some stories are patient enough to wait for their turn.
Bert lives in Dublin, Ohio, with his wife, Jina, and their two daughters Maya and Tara. He has more ideas than he knows what to do with, which has never stopped him from having a few more. He writes because he enjoys discovering where a story will take him — and because somewhere out there, a reader might enjoy making the journey with him.
